Government To Boost Internet Penetration To 95% By 2020

Mr Vincent Osei Sowah Odotei, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Communications, in a speech revealed the enormous effort the government is making to ensure 95% of Ghana’s population gets access to the internet by 2020.

The Minister is working through the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to build communication towers in most areas without internet as part of their effort in achieving their target.

He said, ‘’hopefully by December 2020, 95% of the Ghanaian population should have connectivity. Once they have connectivity, it will provide the platform for the accelerated digitization o the economy. This will ensure that every person, no matter where you live in Ghana, will be included in this digital transformation agenda.’’

He made this speech at the Office of the US-Based IT firm, Slamm Technologies in Accra during its official opening.

This current internet usage of Ghana as of 2017 was 27.8% according to World Internet Usage Statistics.
