Nokia 8: Hands on and First Impressions; #NokiaLovesAndroid

HMD Global’s flagship phone – the Nokia 8 was announced a few months ago. The phone has an all-aluminum body, made with the known durability and quality of the Nokia Brand in manifestation, with all the love from Android.

The Nokia 8 also has an IP54 rating which means it is dust and water resistant therefore you feel safe handling it in dusty or wet areas, including in the rain. The phone also has a 5.3” Quad HD IPS display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, for a pixel density of approximately at 554ppi and not an 18:9 ratio like is becoming increasingly common nowadays.

The Nokia 8 will be officially available for sale on the Ghanaian market soon. Luckily for all of you Mfidie.com readers, we got our hands on the device early and we will be sharing with you hands-on and first impressions. Gear up! There will be a lot of photos.

Design

The 13 MP Camera on the Nokia 8 is very noticeable on the front panel.

The most noticeable feature of the front panel is the 13MP selfie camera which is located at the top. There is also the speaker for calls. About the front camera, it uses a display flash for taking selfies in dark environments.

There are also very well lit Capacitive navigation buttons which are located on the lower side of the front panel, Between them is the home button that doubles as the fingerprint scanner.

At the top of the Nokia 8, there is the good old and forever satisfying 3.5mm audio jack. No need for extra apparatus to listen to your music. Very satisfying!

On the right side of the phone, there are the volume keys and the power button. The power button is conveniently placed below the volume button to allow easy access.

On the left side, there is the SIM Card slot. You can use the sim card slot in 2 ways:

  • 2 Nano Sim Cards
  • 1 Nano Sim Card and 1 SD Card

However, with 64 GB of memory and unlimited storage of your photos on Google, the first option is most appealing.

The bottom of the phone houses the Nokia OZO speakers, a USB Type-C port, and a microphone.

At the rear of the phone, there is one of the greatest features of the phone – the Carl Zeiss 13MP (color + OIS) + 13MP (Mono) dual rear cameras with dual-tone flash.

General Usage

For the most part of today, I have been using the Nokia 8. It’s wonderful how a new phone in my hands does not feel alien to me. Like the Nokia we have known, the phone is built with the user in mind.

Maybe I would have loved for the fingerprint sensor to be at the back of the phone, but it only took a few tries for me to get used to having it on the home button.

The phone weighs just 160g and coupled with its design, it doesn’t feel like there is a 5.3″ screen sized phone in your hands. Every time I held the phone, it felt light, yet sturdy and smooth, therefore providing me with an easy to use experience.

HMD Global has given us the Nokia we know in the form of the Nokia 8 – a solid, quality user-friendly phone.

More about the Nokia 8

The Nokia 8 is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 835, which carries the Adreno 540 GPU. What this means is that the phone will be able to run any applications, multitask and accomplish a lot of your tasks with ease.

It has 64GB of internal storage with 4GB of RAM. With these specs, it is fair to state that HMD Global is on the right track with the Flagship.

A 3,090mAh non-removable battery seems like not much on paper but with the software and my personal usage since having it, it has been good. Oh, Software! The Nokia 8 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box, but since it runs on pure Android, you should be able to upgrade yours too to Android 8.1.

The Nokia 8 will be available in two colors Ghana: Steel, and Blue.
