The best Ghanaians to play in the English Premier League
The English Premier League is full of the best talent from all over the world. One area where players have really shined in the Premier League is Africa. With the likes of Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba, Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Riyad Mahrez.
However, Ghana has had plenty of excellent talent make their move to the Premier League and prosper in the harsh English game. So who are these talented individuals that have done the Black Stars proud?
Michael Essien, Chelsea
You could log in to most betting sites in the UK and place a bet on Essien scoring a goal from outside the box with ease as the midfielder was able to smash a ball home from miles out and find the top corner leaving the opposition goalkeeper flailing or stranded as the ball crashed into the net.
Probably the most successful Ghanian to play in the Premier League in terms of medals as he picked up two Premier Leagues, a Champions League, a League Cup and four FA Cup winners medals during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Asamoah Gyan, Sunderland
He may have only spent just over one season in England (he played three games in 2011-12 before moving) but Gyan was a vital player for Sunderland in the 2010-11 season and his ten league goals ensured that the team finished 10th that year amid a big relegation battle between many sides.
He did not win any trophies but the Sunderland fans enjoyed his presence in their side especially off the back of a successful World Cup with Ghana in 2010.
Sulley Ali Muntari, Portsmouth & Sunderland
A teammate of Gyan’s at Sunderland but he would make his name with Portsmouth in England during his solitary season with the coastal club. He did so well in his only season with Portsmouth that the might of Inter Milan came knocking for him to replace Patrick Vieira.
He did not leave England empty-handed as he picked up the FA Cup under Harry Redknapp’s tutelage. Muntari was key in the semi-final win over Manchester United as he scored the only goal of the game.
Tony Yeboah, Leeds United
The goal of the season man himself. Yeboah had every single rocket goal in his pocket and he proved it. With his volley against Liverpool and his smash against Wimbledon, he was a regular feature on the goal of the month nominations.
Yeboah is a cult hero in Leeds having made 66 appearances for the club and scoring 32 goals across all competitions. Around 1995 school children in Yorkshire could be heard screaming his name as they unleashed their own “Yeboah Strike”.
Jordan Ayew, Aston Villa, Swansea City & Crystal Palace
The tricky winger has been playing in the Premier League for most of his career. He has been quite content in the lower sides of the division and proving very useful, chipping in with many goals during his time in England. The winger has 29 Premier League goals.
