The importance of National Identification Number (NIN)

The Nigerian government establishes the National Identification Number (NIN) to the identity of every Nigerian.

If you from age zero (birth) and above, a citizen and legal resident in Nigeria you are eligible to enroll for the National Identification Number (NIN). It is important for every Nigerian to get their NIN because the Nigerian government uses it to keep records of individuals together.

The records include demographic data, fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial pictures, biometric data, and digital signature for the National Identity Database which can be easy to easily confirm the identity of a person.

National Identification Number (NIN)

After the news from the National Identity Management Commission released 2 weeks ago, making it compulsory for every Nigerian who has registered their SIM to update the record with National Identification Number (NIN) and failure to do so in the two weeks deadline customer sim will be blocked.

What Do Nigerians need NIN for?

Apart from SIM registration, we can make use of the National Identification Number to have complete access to plenty of services from Government Social Services, Voters Card Registration, Issuance and renewal of International Passport, Bank Account Opening and Reactivations, to Consular Services for Nigerian Embassies and Missions abroad e.t.c

How does it work?

Bank Account opening: Every bank in Nigeria needs a means of valid identification as a form of identity before you can open a bank account, or reactivate an account that has been dormant/inactive.
To register for an International passport: Nigeria Immigration has made it compulsory criteria for anyone who wants to apply for a fresh international passport or want a renewal to first show their National ID card with the NIN before they can apply.
Drivers license: A person who intends to drive a vehicle in Nigeria needs to show NIN as a means of identification before he/she can collect a driver’s license. The Federal Road Safety Corps has made it compulsory criteria for anybody.
